Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get my tools and/or knives sharpened?
Most folks get their items sharpened once per year but some folks get on the schedule up to three times per year. Regular honing between sharpening will improve performance and increase the life of the edge. I offer free yearly reminder service but I can adjust it for people who request that.
Does sharpening remove a lot of metal?
Generally speaking, sharpening does not remove a lot of metal. In the case of tools or knives with a lot of damage such as chips or bent/broken tips, more material must be removed to restore a sharp edge.
What do you sharpen?
I mostly sharpen knives, scissors garden tools including shears, pruners and loppers. I also sharpen many other tools that customers bring such as shovels, picks, leather working tools and more.
Do you use machines or sharpen by hand?
I mostly sharpen using machines. Occassionally, some specialty items will be sharpened by hand but it is rare.
How long does sharpening take?
If sharpening is scheduled well in advance, it can be done the same day that customers drop off. I usually sharpen on Friday mornings and many folks drop off Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning so they can have their gear back the same day. I’m rarely unable to complete jobs in less than 3-5 days.
Will Sharpening fix chips or damaged blades?
Sharpening can definitely fix chips and other damage such as bent or broken tips and mis-profiled tools.
Is sharpening safe for expensive high end knives?
Absolutely! Higher end knives are often times a joy to sharpen and come out very sharp!
Do you sharpened serrated knives?
Yes, I do sharpen serrated knives. I have a variety of machine setups to accomodate unique serrated profiles.
